I then gave the party a choice. A skill challenge to find the location within the Hive, or hiring a tout to guild them. They chose to summon Ford, everyone's favorite adolescent Halfing tout. Unfortunately, his cost was far too high at 8000 gp.
Seeking to keep some money in their pocket, the party decided to attempt the skill challenge. I had recently heard a podcast about skill challenges and the speaker suggested not listing skills. Just asking the player what they wanted to do and then fitting that to a skill. So we tried it....it worked exceptionally well. It seemed much more old school. Being outside an artificially created box, created by me, the players were able to explore options I never would have thought of.
They successfully completed the challenge and found the house.
