After some discussion outside of the game, we decided to try skill challenges again.
The party's first task was to convince Adran they were not a threat. It was a complexity one challenge, made even easier...4 successes before 3 failures. Diving in, the party did fairly well and managed to succeed.
With that under their belts, the next challenge was to convince Adran to let them go. This also was a complexity one, but with the correct numbers, 4 successes before 2 failures. Had they failed the previous challenge, the DCs would have risen by 5. It was tight, coming down to the last roll, but once again, the party's use of diplomacy was exemplary and they succeeded. With that, they were informed Dara would accompany them out of camp and give them directions to either the dragonborn settlement, or out of the woods.
With the successful completion of that challenge, a final, third challenge was presented. It would have been extremely difficult to convince Adran to reopen communications with the Dragonborn, but the party had to try. Fortunately for them, there was no penalty for failure.
