Leaving the study, the party passed through the room where they had encountered the crawling claws and headed up the stairs. Once at the top of the stairs, the holes in the wall stopped and the walls took on a different patina. They were of a different type of construction and appeared much older than anything else the party had seen in the tunnels so far.
There was a short hallway at the top of the stairs that ended in a pair of double doors. Passing through the double doors, they entered a massive, pillared room. Once again, this room was much more ancient than the rest of the vault. Another set of double doors were closed at the far end of the room.
With Rudy and Leenia partially across the room, a Reaper appeared in front of Leenia, swiped at her with his scythe and then teleported away, becoming both insubstantial and phased. Shortly afterward, another one appeared in front of the doors the party had entered through. Slamming the doors shut, the party noticed both sets of doors had the pattern of a scythe engraved in it. They quickly surmised the scythes the Reapers had would unlock the doors, so they would have to find a strategy to defeat them.
With combat underway, the party chased the 2 Reapers around the room as they teleported and phased through pillars. The Reapers minor ability proved very challenging for the party. If the Reaper hit with a will attack, the party member would take 10 damage if it attacked the reaper.
After several tough rounds for the party, Ekeraath and Alexander managed to flank one of the Reapers and Rudy came around also. Once one was down and out, it was a simple exercise for the party to chase the other one down and finish it off.
Using the scythes of the monsters, both doors were unlocked and the party proceeded down the stairs behind the far doors.
