During the conversation with the Imp, a dark cloud seemed to pass over the tower and block out all sunlight momentarily. It was followed by crashing and grinding from another part of the tower. The decision was made to attend to this matter before anything else on the floor. So the party crossed over the bridge between the towers and located the room the sound was coming from. Peaking in, the party determined a black dragon had broken through the wall and was inside the room.
Preparing for one of the most difficult challenges they had ever faced, the party entered the battle. After a couple party members moved and attacked, the Dragon went. He began using his frightful presence which laid Ekeraath low and followed that up with an action point and use of his Dragon Breath. The party was clumped up by the door, but most managed to avoid the breath weapon.
As the first round progressed, several party members stepped up, led by Rudy with a 40 point strike, the party dished out a fair amount of damage. As the dragon's turn approached, he cast a cloud of darkness that offered him complete cover, but none for the party. Realizing they were outmatched at this point, the party retreated to the hall, hoping to ambush the dragon as he came through the door.
The dragon was smarter than that and flew out of the tower and came crashing down, through the ceiling onto Mara, Leenia, and Rudy. A couple more rounds played through and the Dragon's darkness recharged. Fleeing around a corner, Mara let launch an arrow that somehow found the mark in the cloud. Kuppies also began a retreat and threw a Magic Missile into the cloud. Once again, luck was with the party and the missile connected, ending the life of the dragon.
Exploring the wizard's sparing room the party found a lightening bow and a dagger of fire.

Hell of a fight here. If that dragon hadn't had some unlucky rolls, we would've been even more hurt. Ekerrath got laid up hard by this thing - weakened, dazed, feared. We found ourselves without our tank, with poor Rudy and Alexander up front ready for some punishment. The fight might also have gone more easily if Alexander had landed the +4 for the encounter daily, roo. Hate when a one-use daily misses.
Now that I'm beginning to see how important it is to make saves, I'm rethinking whether Alexander should switch encounter powers to those that offer an opportunity for a save between rounds. I suspect as fights get tougher, we'll be facing 'save' effects more often.
