Getting some back story

After solving the chess piece puzzle, the party progressed into a library. Still tending the library, the librarian was able to answer a few questions and provide the party of a map of the world. The map is 1000 years old, but it was something.

Here is what the ghost told the party:

History of the Island of Idera

After the Darkness began to spread, the remaining great mages all met in private to come up with a plan. It was decided a small group of every race would be transported to a secret location, to guarantee the continued existence of the civilized races.

A far off island was deemed to be the best choice. However, no such location existed that wasn’t on an existing map. Knowing this, the mages came up with a clever plan. Suggested by Stephen, a wizard who spent much effort learning the secrets of the creation of the world, they would raise an island from the depths of the ocean. With this approach, this island would never appear on a map of the known world, thus the enemy, and many allies would never know it existed.

So Stephen led a small fleet of ships to a location far from any known islands. There, he spent many days invoking a ritual of unsurpassed power. When he was done, this island had risen from the ocean. The ships all landed and were dismantled. If the secret was to continue, no one would be allowed to leave.

The final solution was to hide the island. To that end, a gem was enchanted to cloak the whole island in a thick fog that no ship would dare enter for fear of running aground.

In the thousand years this island has existed, the only person to ever leave was Stephen. He was able to teleport away from the island and return to the council of mages to inform them of the success of their plan. He never returned. Whether to keep the secret of the island, or if he perished in battle, no one here knows.

By the way, in retrospect, it seems sort of strange that if you live on an island and survived an apocalyptic holocost that everyone in the mainland died of - which took out all the great dragons and wizards..

And you have but one defense to keep yourselves and your loved ones alive (the fog-generating defense). Then wouldn't you ensure there was a group of people dedicated to maintaining the defenses? You wouldn't rely completely on automated defense systems. You'd want to establish a 'home isle security' force responsible for guarding the only thing keeping everyone in the island alive and protected from the horrors of the outside world.

Where is that group?

A thousand years is a LONG time. Think about it. People get sloppy and stop worrying about things.

To be fair, I can't tell you how many security measure I forget about at work in 1000 seconds.
