As the ship came through the rift, far above the tower, they realized there was a battle taking place below. Quickly descending, they could see the tower was under attack. As they got a little closer the rank spell of undeath filled their nostrils and they realized the death squad Acererak had sent after them had finally caught up with them.
Once they were almost in range, they witnessed Marovic unleash a massive blast of chain lightening that barely slowed down the creatures. Snarla had already exhausted her abilities and had reverted to wolf form and was trying to chew the face off one of them.
Most of the heroes took my offer of a saving throw, representing a leap off the ship. A success and they were able to convert the energy from their descent into an attack(+2 to hit, +5 damage), or fall prone on a failure. I believe everyone succeeded.
This encounter was a complete joke. Everyone used their new powers, actions points, Alexander's numerous bonuses. I dragged it out, completely ignoring HP, or not everyone would have had a turn.
As the last of the undead were slain, their bodies turned to a viscose goo and oozed toward each other, forming a pool. Before the heroes could react further, the pool erupted into a massive maelstrom, dragging everyone toward its center. There, they were dragged in and even though it only appeared to be an inch deep, were pulled beneath the surface. Not wanted to miss what was going to happen next, Ford jumped from the floating ship, and plunged into the goo as well(at the request of the players).
This encounter wasn't designed to press the party at all. It did have several other purposes. First, I needed to wrap up the Death Squad. They'd served their purpose, making a couple inopportune appearances. Second, I wanted to see just how bad ass the party now is...the answer is extremely. Choosing undead as the ultimate foe is going to be a problem since Leenia is an undead killing machine. Third, I needed a way to get the party to their next destination, and without several new dailies or an action point. Complete success.
And we ended on a cliffhanger, I love it.
No one even wanted to guess at their next destination, just wait to be surprised next session.
