Attack!

The war council the next day was filled to capacity as people waited, with hope, that Sephora had information and that it would be useful. As she took to the podium, screams were heard outside, and a massive boulder came crashing through the tent, crushing her. The city was under attack!


Immediately, Lady Tiandra went into action. She and Stephen went to the aid of Sephora. The Frost Prince and his attendants teleported to safety. Oran told Tiandra he would get his and her people out while she attended to Sephora. Finally, Tiandra turned to the party and told them to defend the teleportation circle while Marovic helped the others escape.


Racing to the circle, the attack was already well underway. Massive Purple Formorian giants and their worshippers, Cyclops, were pouring out of the hills, laying waste to everything in their path. The party took up a defensive position around the circle, to allow Marovic to get people out. They quickly realized this would not be adequate as groups of people were fleeing the onslaught. They would have to venture into the city to attempt to escort them to the portal.


Kuppies laid down a massive wall of fire to help contain one side of the battle field and followed that up with an enlarged stinking cloud, effectively shutting down access of the attackers to that part of the field. Rudy, Alexander, and Ekeraath ventured forth to the other side of the field in the hopes of delaying the oncoming forces. Groups of people continued to flee to the portal and Marovic kept teleporting them away. Unfortunately, every time he activated the portal, he grew more and more tired, till he eventually collapsed from exhaustion.


In the meantime, addition groups helped defend the portal as the weakest of the city inhabitants escaped. Several groups fell during the battle, but Kuppies managed to work the portal and allow the rest to escape. Finally, all that was left, was a ruined tent city, a large force of Formorians and Cyclops, the unconscious Marovic, and the Heroes of Idera.


Marovic managed to drag himself to the portal as Kuppies, Alexander, and Leenia defended the immediate area. Ekeraath and Rudy were busy slugging it out with a pair of Fomorians who kept using their evil eye power to immobilize the heroes. Rudy managed to avoid many of the attacks of the giant he was fighting, however, Ekeraath took a massive beating from his giant. Eventually, they managed to escape to the portal, and the Heroes, along with Marovic escaped to the mansion Stephen has gifted to them.


For the record, I thought this was one of the best battles we’ve had in a long time. Everyone exhausted most of their abilities, the change in goal(defend instead of kill everything) was a great change of pace, and finally, even after 2+ hours, the battle did not crawl. I did make one mistake in that the Evil Eye ability(a minor) was completely overpowering for Ekeraath and Rudy, immobilizing them EVERY round. In the end, I chose not to apply it one turn(admitting my mistake), to give them the ability to escape.
