After a couple more hours of leading their mounts through the forest, the path began to get muddy and eventually ended at a swampy river that needed to be crossed. Mara, being the ranger, sensed something wasn't "right" about the area. There was no wildlife near the river. Leenia chimed in she thought something like crocodiles or snakes probably inhabited it.
As the party tried to figure a way across, including many brilliant options, like the walk on water ritual(stupid DM said no), a Feymire crocodile attacked. This massive beast was capable to swallowing a person whole. Spending a couple rounds in combat with it, proved minimally effective as it was difficult to hit and while people were escaping it's grasp, it was not without damage. Rudy's attempt to flank it was met by 2 visejaw crocodiles located elsewhere in the water.
Retreating away from the shore, the party attempted to come up with more options. Eventually, a small tree was cut down to form a bridge to the first land mass in the river. Unfortunately, the horses would not go near the river and ultimately, the party was forced to leave them behind. Arriving at the first land mass, a visejaw crocodile slithered out of the water, preparing to attack.
Knowing what had to be done, Rudy and Ekeraath had stayed behind. Once everyone was on the bridge, they slaughtered a horse and threw it into the river, drawing all the crocodiles to it. With that distraction, the party hustled across without further incident.
I should note, I expected you guys to wade in, take some hits, and dish some damage. I was curious if once you got across, you would stay in the water and finish the crocodiles. Obviously, it didn't work out as I expected.
