The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly - 1/21/09

The Good:

The goblin pirates were a waste of time. Their ship was a time consuming annoyance while the heroes’ real prey was sailing down the coast, getting away. Alexander reached into his pack and produced a tightly-wrapped bag containing wizard’s fire – an alchemical agent that burst into flame when exposed to air. He pulled back and threw it with all his might. The pouch twisted in the air and splattered on the deck of the goblin ship, spreading flames everywhere.

The Bad:

The lighthouse was empty. And dark. As the party entered the ground floor, they found four volcanic vents that powered the lighthouse were doused. They advanced cautiously. In moments, they realized why. Hissing steam and smoke, four Magma striders climbed out of the vents and struck.

The Ugly:

The chase lasted all day and into the dusk. As night began to set, the party found a cave steered their exhausted mounts towards the entrance. It would be close. Kraag’s raiders had gained ground and might overtake them. Ekerrath’s horse stumbled, and he fell from it. He didn’t have time to remount. He made it inside just as the hobgoblin force converged on the entrance.

“Where are we?” panted Mara.

“The cave that the pirate Roberts spoke of,” said Leenia.
“Wait a minute. Isn’t there a dragon in that cave?” asked Alexander.

Rudy didn’t need any urging. He crept to the back of the cave and found a narrow passage, which he explored. A few minutes passed. The raiders were not yet prepared to risk themselves storming the main entrance. They waited outside. Leaving through the front entrance meant death.

Rudy emerged from the back passage, grinning.

“What did you find?” asked Cuppies.

“A dragon!”
