Inserting the rod, Leenia had picked up in the altar, into the pedestal, the room spun, stomachs churned and the party found itself on another plane. After getting their bearings, the party found themselves in an octagon shaped room. In the center of the room was the small table with the rod still embedded in it. Encircling that was another teleportation ring. Four of the walls had doors that are completely unadorned save for a small, 1 inch hole next to it. There was a fifth door with a skull carved in it and 2 glowing red crystal eyes. The other 3 walls have small windows that look out over a dark, dreary, storm ravaged plane.
Removing the rod from the pedestal, the party began to test it on each of the 4 holes next to the doors. Luck was not with them and they found the rod worked in the last door they tried, revealing an ascending staircase. Each incorrect test had resulted in a blast of necrotic damage. Studying the massive double doors, it appeared as if Acererak himself was projecting out of the door, similar to a hologram. Realizing they could not gain access through the door, the party headed up the stairs behind the one door they could open.
Ascending the stairs, they found yourselves in a large square room. Immediately in front of them was an opening that led to an altar. On either side of the room was a regular size door and behind the party a large double door with an inscription. The inscription read “The Cost of Failure”.
Creeping forward, Rudy entered the altar area. Looking around, he saw a skull with red crystal eyes centered on it. This was obviously in dedication to Acererak. Flanking the altar were 2 medium creatures wrapped in bandages.
As soon as the mummies sensed living beings, they came to life and immediately attacked. The limited space presented some slight difficulties with regards to maneuverability, but other than Ekeraath being infected with a brief bout of Mummy Rot, the encounter was uneventful.
Searching the room, there was nothing else of note. There wasn't even a secret compartment in the altar.
