Thousands of years ago, Simon Amber, the one from the chapel, who tried to sacrifice Kuppies, was a righteous man. He and Stephen worked side by side using Magic and Prayer to lead the Amber family in the ways of good and to keep Averoigne safe. When the debate regarding the outlawing of magic began, Stephen and Simon worked tirelessly in support of magic. As the debate was coming to an end, and it did not look like Magic would win, Simon approached Stephen regarding the creation of an artifact that would allow potential enemies and rivals to be more sympathetic to the owner.
Stephen was outraged at the idea, realizing use of magic to continue its legal use could only result in a worse outcome should the secret be found out. Simon continued on without Stephen’s help, enlisting the aid of another wizard. Simon had a sword forged in secrecy and working with the other wizard, he sought to enchant it as he had planned. Unfortunately for poor Simon, the other wizard turned out to be the lich Acererak. Entering Simon’s mind, he corrupted it and cursed the sword.
Little detail is known regarding the curse as few people who possess the sword live long. It is known that initially the sword will attempt to have the bearer attack any potential enemies and continue combat until that being is dead. Rumors exist that as the power of the individual grows, so does the power of the sword and its influence over the owner.
Simon’s plan had been to give the sword to the leader of those who wanted magic to remain in the land and hence, use his influence to keep magic alive. Unfortunately, the curse resulted in a far worse outcome, once the sword was presented. The leader took the sword hoping to use it as planned. Sadly, he viewed those across the table as adversaries and the sword compelled him to attack. The resulting slaughter quickly ended the magic debate as the general populous saw how magic could be corrupted.
Stephen wisely took his family, even the warped and twisted Simon with him as they fled Averoigne in search of a new home. Eventually, they found Idera and while Stephen hoped to eventually let his family join the general populous, they had all begun to show signs of insanity. Hence he locked them away in the mansion, caring for them as best he could. For over a thousand years they have been captive there, their insanity growing.
Now by removing the sword, Simon has been able to use his link to it to escape as well. After being trapped for so long, evil has permeated his soul and his insanity has allowed him to learn things no mortal should ever be allowed to see.
Stephen and the rest of the Ambers have no power over the sword since it was forged with their blood.
Stephen may know of other ways to destroy it, but he himself, cannot.
