The Dam

After the encounter, Rard had a long conversation with the party. He had some evidence to support the Cult of the Infernal Fang was headed to the Citadel of Seasons. In addition, he asked the party to go to the citadel and eliminate the goblin threat to the region.
It was theorized that by destroying the dam at the top of the mountain, the goblin menace would be washed away. Rard was aware of a location to land the ship on the back of the island and ascend a steep, hidden trail to the top of the mountain. This would allow the party to sneak up to the guardhouse by the dam, take out the guards, and destroy the dam.
I had hoped this encounter would be better than it ended up being. The party spent a substantial amount of time discussing tactics and how they wanted the encounter to run. It really didn't matter as they rolled phenomenally throughout the battle.
The setup was 2 archers on the roof of the guard house, 2 goblins patrolling the beach, 2 more guarding the door, and a bugbear and goblin inside. I did make the mistake of saying the archers had cover and then forgetting to apply that modifier...combat would have been much different.
After the party wiped out the monsters, we decided to use destroying the dam as a skill challenge. In retrospect, this wasn't a good choice, as the party really couldn't fail. Still, it was a great exercise that I think allowed the party to understand skill challenges better.
Everyone participated, a perception check by Mara found 4 supporting beams that needed to be destroyed to take out the dam. Rudy and Ekeraath worked together to use a grappling hook and rope to pull one out. Kuppies used arcana to determine a magic missile would take another one out. Next, an oil flask, a couple flaming errors, and a fire spell took out the third one. Finally, the 4th one was once again pulled out with a rope and grappling hook. The dam was destroyed and washed the majority of the goblin forces out into the ocean.
