After defeated the Kobolds on deck, the party looked to investigate the hold. Rudy was unable to see anything by looking down, so he went down the ladder with Ekeraath right behind him. Waiting for them were 2 kobold dragonshields and a wyrmpriest. It was an interesting battle as the party was in a confined space with slave cages all over the hold.
Combat quickly turned into a slugfest with the wyrmpriest causing some significant pain with his Energy Orb and Breath Weapon. Eventually, the party prevailed and freed the slaves in the pens.
Among the survivors was a female elven ranger. Turns out she is from the same island the party is from. She was on a fishing boat that got lost at sea and sacked by the kobolds.
Also among the survivors is a human named Michael. He and some of the other men can pilot the boat. Michael mentions he serves Rard, the son of Richard. Richard rules and protects a small group of islands in the area.

This was an interesting fight - I really hadn't expected there to be baddies in the ship hold. For some reason, I expected all of them to come topside during the initial fight. Especially since we bombarded them with catapults.
I think of all of our fights last week, this was the one we did the worst in tactically. We allowed ourselves to get bunched up in tight spaces, we didn't set ourselves up to appropriately flank, and missed out on a lot of combat advantage opportunities.
For example, when Alexander came down into the hold, he should have stayed directly across from Half Pint, but instead moved one space out of the way. The initial thinking was that someone else was going to climb down and he wanted to make space. But in retrospect, we could have finished off the kobolds much more quickly if we had that combat advantage.
Another thing - we knew the robed kobold guys with the energy spheres were wyrmpriests who could breath fire from our experience in the balcony on the cave, but we still let ourselves get bunched up and when he used his breath weapon, I think we all got hit. That probably could have been avoided, too.
Last but not least - if we had been really thinking about it, Alex and Ekerath could have worked on the kobolds while Half Pint went around picking the locks to the cages. Then we instantly would have had some superior numbers.
Next time we kill slavemasters, we should make it a priority to free the prisoners during combat!
I hate it when you guys get clever and get NPCs to do your dirty work.
Still, I figured those three Kobolds would have heard the commotion and stayed to guard the prisoners, trusting in their comrades to fight off the attackers.
As I recall, we inquired as to the prisoners condition and Josh told us they were in no condition to help. A good idea though if the situation arises in the future.
