The lead Illithid made the following offer. He knew the heroes were searching for the Hand of Vecna. He offered to trade it to them, in return for them recovering a piece of the Ur-Brain, the first great brain of the Mind Flayers, from when they first entered the Underdark.
He informed them that the Illithids believed there was a piece of the brain inside the body of a gargantuan, dead, Aboleth. Perhaps the largest Aboleth ever. He also offered to transport the heroes near to it and keep the portal open for their return.
