Meeting an Old Aquaintance

After returning from the hospital, Leenia joins the party at the bazaar. There is nothing of interest to the party, until Rudy thinks he sees Harbek, dwarven representative of the council from the island. Before Rudy can notify the entire party, Harbek takes off.

This was my first attempt at a chase. It worked ok, but I think it would work better in a larger environment where a map could be used, rather than just the skill checks. The party is not able to catch up to Harbek and he escapes.

That evening, in the common room of the inn, as the party is finishing up, Harbek joins them. He makes them aware of the following:
  • The dwarves found a passageway through the underdark about 6 months ago
  • Mara was recruited to scout the surrounding lands
  • The rest of the council is unaware as it would raise too many questions
  • He has sent for help to lend support to Rard, but it is at least 2 days away
  • The trip to/from the island is typically a 6 day hike through the underdark
  • The dwarves have pretty much been in recon mode. However, Harbek has met secretly with Rard and offered him assistance.
Harbek answers some additional questions. Particularly related to a ship in the harbor that is covered with blast marks and the potential that Damakos is nearby. Based on information from the people Harbek has interviewed, Damakos and the rest of his gang were headed for the Citadel of the Seasons.

Harbek leaves as he asks the party to stay until his reinforcements can arrive. He leaves the decision with them.

I really liked the idea of a chase using skill checks. I think maybe if we were to try a chase variant again, you might initially have had the entire party in pursuit. Then instead of giving the party a choice, you select specific people to make a skill check. Example:

"Leenia, you're in the front, and the only one to see Harbek disappear around a corner. Make a perception roll."

Then if that succeeds, the next check:

"A cart rolls in front of Cappy. Cappy, roll an acrobatics check."

If Cappy fails, he falls behind in the chase and is out of it, perhaps.

So gradually party members drop out as they fail checks until one person is left sort of thing? I think it'll just take some practice to adjust, is all.

That is a very good idea/way of running it.

I'll have to try something like that in the future.
