Here is what the note said:
As Leenia is tending the wounded, the two other clerics, old humans, comment on her elven heritage and how they have not seen an elf in almost 50 years. Erdan was the high priest of the Citadel of the Seasons. A fantastic structure built on a nearby island. It housed a majestic cathedral dedicated to the four seasons, and a Tower that was one of the meeting places of the Wizard’s Council.
Sadly, 50 years ago, the Goblins found the Citadel and rather than attack it, they built a damn and flooded it, forcing the residents out. Few escaped as the goblins were waiting to kill anyone fleeing. Once all the residents had fled, the goblins attempted to break the dam, but failed. Their answer was to build a second dam and redirect the waterfall that fed the Citadel to a different outlet. The result is a swamp like mess with the many of the structures partially submerged.
To add final insult to injury, the goblins occupied the Citadel and turned it into their base of operations for the area. Eliminating the leadership there would certainly strike a blow to the goblins and perhaps even lift their threat from the area.
It is widely believed that Erdan did not flee, but his fate is unknown. Of the few people alive who remember him and the citadel, many believe he still lives, either hiding in the catacombs beneath it, or as a prisoner in the Citadel that he tended to for 200 years.
Later, when Leenia did share this, Kuppies made a history check and was able to add the following to the conversation:
You have heard legends of the Citadel.
As a temple, it was one of the greatest in the world. Miracles were not uncommon, from healing the sick, to raising the dead.
Not only was it a religious temple, but great magic was performed there as well. The unity of nature provided exceptional access to spell components and connections to the 4 elemental planes.

It strikes me that there's an easy way to rid the Citadel of goblins: We could send a force to the second dam and then destroy that damn, which would in turn flood the Citadel. Then we go back to the Citadel and run a clean up operation on the survivors, and loot whatever wasn't damaged.
It seems as if this will be our next stop sometime soon. Looking forward to it.
Also, I find it perplexing that the Council is sending us to learn what happened in the outside world, wasting a powerful and expensive magic boat to do so, and yet they already had contacts to the outside world. This is either the most ineffective council ever or there's something more to the story - it's filled with contradictions and redundancies, it seems.
Last but not least, it also seems strange that we have trouble getting a straight answer from anyone on what's been going on outside the island for the past 1000 years. I know these people have lived on an island of their own, but you'd think we'd be able to learn more about their island, its history and customs. Sometimes it feels like pulling teeth to get any background world information! :)
You guys missed the fact that the dwarves had not shared the fact they found a way off the island with the rest of the council. Why, is their prerogative.
As for the people not knowing much, think islands of light spread amongst the darkness.
Sorry if you want more background, I want to give it to you, but I don't want to give you everything at once. That ruins my story telling and any surprises.
What would have happened if you knew Luke and Leia's brother? Besides getting grossed out when she kisses him on Hoth? What about Vader as his father?
Flooding the Citadel could cause all sorts of damage that we may not have counted on, whether it's treasure floating away or artifacts, books, scroll, etc washing beyond use. Also I wonder if there are devious traps awaiting us.
Also, I thought the council's contact with the outside world is minimal? Also operate under the presumption that they have all sorts of motives for sending us on the mission. Contradictions are to be expected.
